How To Wear…RED
RED: It’s been a trending color for several seasons now, and while one Meg(h)an may hate red, and the other mostly likes it for nails, lips, and shoes, we felt it was time to teach our fashion besties how to wear red well. Especially for those of you wanting to try this trendy color and are unsure how to wear it without looking like you’re promoting your favorite football team or feeling like a Christmas decoration. Scroll down for winning color combos and outfit inspo for various sizes, shapes, and skin tones.
But first, A little Color theory crash course :
Opposite colors on the color wheel are called complementary colors.
Analogous colors are next to each other on the wheel, like blue and indigo.
Using varying shades of colors in the same family gives a tonal look.
Neutrals like, black, white, and tan or khaki always almost go together or, with any color. Denim is often treated as a neutral also.
When you are deciding how to ensure colors work together, consider color temperatures. If your outfit color palette is cool, your red piece should have cooler undertones. Experiment with the colors next to each other!
Let’s see some examples, eh? We also made you a Pinterest board with myriad red looks. You’re welcome. :)
Red and Green… without the Christmas Vibes
Unless you’re trying to feel like a Christmas Character, opt for Red and olive green. This khaki/olive/army color is muted enough to act as a neutral and tones down even the brightest of reds. Wear it with a deeper burgundy for a richer fall palette. If you’re feeling wild, try chartreuse with red. The key is stay away from that classic cherry red and deep emerald or Kelly green to avoid holiday cheer throughout the rest of the year.
Red and light blue
Whether the blue comes in to play with a lighter wash denim or a light blue oxford shirt, this combo feels fresh and gives Americana vibes without being so on-the-nose patriotic.
Red and Cream
If you want to play it a bit safe then opt for a neutral like cream to tone down the boldness of the red and keep things crisp. Remember, think about if the red and cream have brown or blue undertones when pairing them together.
Red and Purple or Red and Pink… for the bold besties
Yes, there is a way to do it without looking like a Valentine’s candy box. Color block with confidence by ensuring it looks intentional and not sloppily done, and then make sure you walk in it confidently!
Red and Brown:
Brown and red sounds gross in theory but when we see it in front of our eyes, we like. These warm colors work well together if they are in fact both warm, so check for that.
Red and Red:
Red on red on red, also known as Monochromatic, or wearing one color. This can create a clean and chic look when done well. Red is such a bold color, be conscientious about how much red you’re wearing, and to break it up, play with different textures.
Red and Black
Our aversion to red and black is due largely to the barrage of sports team and halloween costumes that embody this combo. But, like anything, if you can pair it in an intentional and confident way, you can make it chic. Make it more than just a red sweater with black jeans, make it more interesting than that, bestie. Try making the red a pop, and keeping the black sleek underneath a red topper.
